Walter J. Wheatley of Pearl River, NY passed away on Monday, March 22. 2021. He was 81.
Mr. Wheatley was a New York City Firefighter for 25 years before retiring in 1987. He was an Orangetown Fire Inspector for 21 years retiring in 2011.
Walter was born June 6, 1939 in Manhattan, NY to Patrick and Catherine (Molloy) Wheatley.
He served in the Army National Guard as a medic attaining the rank of Sergeant.
On November 10, 1962 he married Margaret Maher at St. Elizabeth R. C. Church in Washington Heights.
Walter lived in Pearl River for 46 years before that he lived in Inwood from 1962 to 1975.
Walter was a humble quiet man who will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his sense of humor, kind heart and generosity. Locally, he enjoyed golfing with his friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Margaret; his son, W. Scott and daughter, Christine (Paul)McWeeney; grandchildren, Allison and Peter McWeeney and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers, Patrick (Buddy) Wheatley and Dr. Joseph Wheatley.
He is predeceased by his sisters, Catherine McCarten, Anna Lynch and Loretta O’Donnell.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Saturday at St. Aedan R. C. Church, Pearl River. Entombment will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery, Nanuet, NY. Visiting is Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM At Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc.
Friends may send memorial donations to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital or Tunnel to Towers.
