Michael Vislocky Obituary

Michael (Mike) Vislocky, a long-time resident of Pearl River, died of natural causes on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Sunrise Woodcliff Lake.  He was one week away from his 100th birthday.  Mike worked as a telephone installer, and later as a computer programmer, for the New York Telephone Company in New York, NY for over 35 years before retiring in May of 1985.  He was born in Star Junction, Pennsylvania to Nicholas and Mary (Yanasko) Vislocky.  His parents immigrated from Littmanova, Slovakia shortly before he was born.  Mary died when he was two years old and his father married Kate (Hlinka), they had two more sons, Charles (Charlie) and George.  The family moved to lower Manhattan where Mike completed primary and high school, they then moved to Brooklyn.  Mike served in the United States Army during World War II, he joined in October 1942 at the age of 19.  He was as a Radio Repairman in the Signal Corps in Southeast Asia and earned several medals including the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.  He was honorably discharged in January 1946.

Mike met Elizabeth (Betty) Hahn in 1953 at Sagamore Resort where he was a champion sailor.  They married in 1954 and lived in Forest Hills, New York until the birth of their first child, Kathryn (Kathy) in 1956 after which they moved to Pearl River.  Son Michael was born in 1958 and Thomas followed in 1964.  Mike’s brothers and cousins lived nearby so family was a constant presence in the family’s life throughout the years, from celebrating holidays together to birthdays, graduations, and weddings.  Families vacationed together at Cape Cod and Lake George when the kids were younger where Mike enjoyed boating, fishing and ocean swimming.  Many summer weekends were spent at home with the adults sitting in a circle on the grass talking and the kids swimming in the family’s pool.  The women played mahjong and the men worked on projects at each other’s houses.  In later years the group enjoyed frequent trips to the Poconos, Alaska, Europe and the Caribbean.  They were members of the Pearl River Senior Club for many years.  They enjoyed simple but full and happy lives.

Mike is survived by his children Kathy, Michael and Thomas, and daughter-in-law Barbara Vislocky.  He has four grandchildren, Crystal Stelick (Ryan), Nick Vislocky (Melinda), Al Berardi (Jana) and Jennifer Baxter (Joseph).  He also has six great-grandchildren, Evan Stelick, Lauren Stelick, Emery Vislocky, Ivy Vislocky, Aidan Baxter and Audrey Baxter, with a seventh due next month.  He is also survived by his brother George Vislocky (Maryann), sister-in-law Judi van Pelt (Russ), sister-in-law Joan Ratto, and cousin Mary Peles, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.  Family members who pre-deceased Mike are his parents, loving wife Betty, brother Charlie Vislocky and his wife Margie, brother-in-law Pete Ratto, cousin George Pacanovsky and his wife Jean, cousin John Peles, son-in-law Al Berardi and niece Margaret Vislocky.
