John Cunningham Obituary

John “Jack” Cunningham of Pearl River, New York, 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on December 2, 2022.

Jack was loved by his wife of 57 years, Margaret (Mimnagh). He was cherished by his two children Thomas Cunningham of Pearl River and his daughter Michele and husband Shannon Casscles of Pearl River. The light of his life was being a grandpa to Emily Ferretti and Cole Casscles. He is survived by his brothers James and Michael Cunningham and predeceased by his sister Florence and brother Richard.

Jack was born on May 17, 1935, in Manhattan, New York to John and Annie (Crehan) Cunningham. He grew up in Jamacia, Queens and the Bronx, New York before moving to Pearl River in 1965. He attended St. Catherine’s of Sienna grammar school in St. Albans Queens and further graduated from William Howard Taft High School in the Bronx, New York. He earned an Associate degree in 1975 from SUNY Rockland. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the US Army Infantry as a Specialist 3 Corporal from 1955-1957.

Jack began his 28-year career working as a bus driver for MaBSTOA. He was also a member of TWU Local 100 in the Bronx, New York. After retiring in 1985 he joined the Clarkstown Mini Trans where he worked for an additional 13 years.

Jack proudly stood by his community and was one of the founding members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians where he volunteered for many years at St. Zita’s Convent and numerous functions. He was also a long-time member of the American Legion Post 329 and Pearl River Elks. Jack was a parishioner at St. Aedan’s Parish for 57 years.

Jack had 3 loves. His family, his country, and his Irish heritage. He loved traveling to Ireland, from Galway where his roots lie to Drumlish, Longford his wife’s hometown. Jack was known for his patriotism and moral convictions. He proudly stood at the Memorial Park in Nanuet every Saturday following the September 11th terrorist attacks to support our troops, rain or shine.

Jack was a hardworking, humble, and funny man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
