Edward Coffey Obituary

Edward Patrick Coffey, 92 of Pearl River, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Montefiore Nyack Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born the youngest of nine children to Joseph and Margaret (Hughes)  Coffey on October 26, 1930 and grew up in Manhattan.  He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and later went to Manhattan College on an athletic scholarship where he served as catcher for the Jaspers’ baseball team, graduating in 1957.  After college, Ed briefly played semi professional baseball before going back to school to earn his Master of Arts in Education from Columbia University.

Ed married the love of his life, Anne Finneran, at Good Shepherd Church in Inwood on April 27, 1957.  They moved to Rockland County where they raised their four children and lived happily together for sixty six years.  Mr. Coffey was employed as a physical education teacher in the East Ramapo Central School District until his retirement in 1995.

Ed enjoyed playing volleyball with his buddies from the Ancient Order of Hibernians and from the Nauraushaun Swim Club, watching the New York Giants and drinking chocolate milk but most of all, he cherished his family, his Catholic faith and his country.

He is survived by his loving wife Anne of Pearl River, his grateful children, Virginia Collins of Pleasantville, NY.  Edward J Coffey of Madison, NJ.  Anne Marie Coffey of Leland, NC and Brian Coffey (Christine O’Connor) of Tappan, NY.

Pop will be sorely missed by his grandchildren Brendan (Allyson) Collins, Aileen Collins, Michaela Coffey,  Claire Coffey and Jack Coffey and great granddaughter Maeve Collins.

Ed was predeceased by son-in-law Mark Collins, daughter-in-law Catherine Coffey, his parents Joseph and Margaret Coffey and siblings James Coffey, Margaret Finucane, Jane O’Halloran, John Coffey, Catherine McNamara, Joseph Coffey and Mary Kelly.

A visitation will be held at the Wyman Fisher Funeral Home in Pearl River on Thursday, May 25th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Aedan’s Catholic Church at 10:00am on Friday, May 26th.  Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
