Donald E. Grosso of Chestnut Ridge, NY passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2022. He was 92.
Mr. Grosso was a licensed professional engineer and the first Director of Public Works for the Village of Suffern before retiring in 2000.
Donald was born April 8, 1930, in Allentown, PA to Frank and Cecilia (Waldeck) Grosso.
He grew up in Lyndhurst, NJ, and graduated from Lyndhurst HS. He received his bachelor's in engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his master's in civil engineering from NJIT.
In 1953, he eloped with Alice A. Gillis and they remained happily married for 60 years.
He started his career working as a civil engineer for such projects as modernizing the Major Deegan Expressway, and designing and engineering during the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and various other bridges and highways in the NJ and NY area.
He also worked as an engineer for the Rockland County Health Department and was a significant force in the overhaul of the Suffern public utility set-up. He was a member of the Hudson Valley Water Works Association and a founding member of the William P Faist Ambulance Corps.
He was an active member of the Old Stone Church in Upper Saddle River, NJ, and a member of Gideons International.
Donald was a man of strong character who will be remembered as a soft-spoken man who was humble, good-natured, and always generous to his community and others in need.
He is survived by his children, son Kevin (Debbie) Middletown, NY; son, Jan of Chestnut Ridge, NY; daughter, Heidi (Scott) Savlowitz Queens, NY; daughter, Noëlle of Montclair, NJ and son-in-law Tom Keegan of Olathe, KS.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Thomas, Brittany, Kristin, Lauren, Brian, David, and Justin; great-grandchildren, Dominic and Dylan. Brother Corbin (Gen) of Lyndhurst, NJ, and brother-in-law Jack of NC.
He is predeceased by his wife, Alice (2013), daughter, Robin Keegan (2003), son, Jeffrey (1958), and brothers Bart, Frank, John, and sister, Jackie.
Visiting is Friday, May 20, 2022, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc. Funeral service is to be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at the Old Stone Church, Saddle River, NJ. Burial will follow at the Old Stone Church Cemetery.
