Dennis Smith Obituary


Dennis A. Smith passed away peacefully on Saturday, November  28, 2020 at the age of 84 after a brief illness.  He was a resident of Pearl River, NY for 48 years. Dennis was born November 17, 1936 in Jersey City, NJ to Frederick J. and Theresa (Dennis) Smith. He grew up in Westwood, NJ and had very fond memories of growing up there.  At the age of 19, Dennis joined the U. S. Army.  Upon returning in 1960, he married the love of his life, Margaret Hopper at the Old Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church.  Dennis loved the outdoors.  He enjoyed gardening, fishing and being by the water.  He and his wife Margaret happily volunteered for Meals on Wheels for ten years.  Dennis worked for United Parcel Service for 29 years, retiring in 1992.  Locally, Dennis was a member of the Pearl River Elks.
He is survived by his son, Richard Smith and daughter-in-law, Cathy, his daughter, Donna LaPoma and son-in-law, Nicholas and his three grandchildren, Rachel and her boyfriend, Chris, Anthony and his fiancé, Erin and Michael.  He is also survived by his two sisters, Marjorie of Norwood, NJ and Janet of Dallas, TX.  He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret (2013), Dennis and Margaret were married for 53 years.  
Due to the current situation visitation will be private.  A celebration of life will be held at a later time.  Those who wish to make memorial contributions may donate to Meals on Wheels, Nanuet, NY.
