William Dwyer Obituary

William J. Dwyer of Jewett and Pearl River, New York, and Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Brooklyn, suddenly passed away on Friday, September 13, 2019 at Albany Medical Center at the age of 76. He rose to the rank of NYPD Deputy Inspector in Brooklyn, before retiring after 31 years. He served as a Vice President of the NYPD Emerald Society and was a member of the 10-13 Association, the Pulaski, Stueben, and Columbia Fraternal Organizations, the Anchor Club, the Captain’s Endowment Association, the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society of Brooklyn and Queens, the Pearl River Ancient Order of Hibernians and a lifelong Member of the Sergeants Benevolent Association. After his retirement, he also served as the Zoning Enforcement Officer for the Town of Jewett.

He was born on May 3, 1943 to the late William F. and Dorothy (Cavanagh) Dwyer.  He was a member of the first graduating class of Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge and graduated in 1965 from St. John’s University, with a BA in Business Administration.

On April 25, 1992, he married the love of his life, Ann Marie, at St Margaret’s Church, in Pearl River, NY. Bill and Ann recently moved to Pearl River and prior to that he lived in Jewett, NY from 1993 to 2019 and Delray Beach, Florida from 2005 to the present.

His life was one of service, to protect and defend, plus his generous spirit extended to everyone in his community, but especially to all the children and grandchildren in his family. Bill was extremely well-liked and respected at work and will always be remembered as a Cop’s Cop, which is the highest compliment given to an officer. He was a proud Irishman and his dry sense of humor and one-liners will truly be missed. As a history buff, he enjoyed traveling the country with his wife, stopping at every historical site and Church enroute.

He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Ann Marie (nee Sweeney), his cherished sister, Mary Montegari (Art), his sister-in-laws, Susanne Hartmann (Richard) of Rocky Point, N.C., Mary Murphy, Teresa Bader (Raymond), Joan Moore (Dermot), all from Pearl River, NY, Eleanor Czarnecki (Anthony) of Rochester, NY, and his brother-in-law, William Sweeney (Marianne) of Glen Ridge, NJ.  He will be greatly missed by his 24 nieces and nephews and his 25 grand nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm Monday and Tuesday, September 16th and 17th. The 10am Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at St Margaret’s Church in Pearl River, NY. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
