George Francis Jochum of St. Augustine Fl formerly of Pearl River NY died on June 1st 2019. He was 89.
Dr. Jochum was the first principal at North Rockland High School in Thiells NY for 20 years before retiring in 1989. Prior to that he served as principal at James A. Farley Middle School and was a science department head in Copiague NY.
Dr. Jochum was born October 29, 1929 in The Bronx, NY to George and Elizabeth (O’Donnell) Jochum.
Prior to serving in the US Army from 1953 to 1955., he was an Irish Christian Brother. He earned a Bachelors degree in education from Fordham University, a Master’s degree from Columbia University, a Professional degree from St. John’s University, and his Doctorate degree from Nova University.
On August 24, 1957, he married Dolores Alice Backoff and they were married for 61 years until her death in October 2018. Dr. and Mrs. Jochum resided in Pearl River NY. for 27 years before retiring to St. Augustine. He is survived by his children, Lynn Pearse (Jeff), Christopher (Anne), Ellen McLiverty (James) and Stephen (Michele); seven grandchildren, Zachary and Tyler (Talia) LaVallee, Hayley Jochum, Christopher and Brian McLiverty and Lindsey and Jake Jochum and his great- granddaughters Brooklynn and Giabella LaVallee.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi R. C. Church, West Nyack, NY. Burial will follow at Cemetery of the Ascension, Airmont, NY. Visiting is Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM at Wyman-Fisher Funeral Home Inc.
