Dennis Murray

Dennis Murray passed away peacefully on August 29, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Dennis was born February 8, 1930 to Sarah (Brazil) and Bernard Murray in the Vinegar Hill section of Manhattan. During his childhood, his Catholic faith was instilled at Annunciation Boys School and at Power Memorial High School. Dennis served in the Army during the Korean War and joined the New York City Police Department when he returned. He retired from the NYPD in 1979 and spent the next ten years working for Munich Reinsurance Company in midtown Manhattan.

After spending years living in Visitation Parish in the Bronx, Dennis moved to Pearl River. Dennis had a great love for his Irish heritage. He was a daily communicant at St. Margaret’s where he also served on the Parish Council. In 2018, Dennis moved to Dowling Gardens Senior Housing in Sparkill, NY where his kindness and compassion touched all the residents and staff. He gained many new friends and was loved by all.

Dennis was a New Yorker, through and through. He was a longtime loyal fan of all New York sports teams.

Family was very important to Dennis. He was a loving father to Mary Ellen. In addition, Dennis also maintained close relationships with his nieces and nephews.  Dennis was born into a new life of sobriety on June 26, 1968.  He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and spent 51 years in the program. He cherished the friendships he made and helped many people. The Pearl River Group was truly a second family to Dennis.

Dennis had a tremendous devotion to our Blessed Mother and prayed the rosary daily. He was always looking to be of service to anyone in need. He was very generous with his time and resources. Dennis was predeceased by his parents, his brother Bernard (Loretta), and his sister Mary Mahoney (Christopher). He is survived by his loving nieces Mary Beth Clinton (Joe), Susan Gehringer (Ray), Loretta Baile (Robert), Marianne and Kathleen Murray along with his nephews, Christopher (Kelly) and Kevin (Jane) Mahoney, Bud (Joan), Robert (Ruth), Timothy (Maureen), Dennis (Leonore) and Terrence (Melissa) Murray. He was adored by his many grandnieces and grandnephews. We were all lucky to have had Uncle Dennis in our lives.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at St. Margaret of Antioch Church, Pearl River, NY.  Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. Visitation will be Monday, September 2, 2019 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm.
