It is with great sadness, that we announce that James “Jim” Spink of Pearl River NY passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his children on Saturday, March 23, 2024. He was born on October 13, 1942 in the Bronx New York. He was the son of Harold and Elizabeth (Manning) Spink. He retired as a captain from the New York City Fire Department after 35 years of distinguished service. Jim served his country in the United States Marine corp. Reserves.
After retiring, Jim Spink enjoyed watching the New York Yankees, Giants and Rangers games, Family Feud, and completing crossword puzzles. In his early days, he would spend time playing softball with his FDNY buddies. He developed a passion for the game of golf and enjoyed being a part of the Tonto/Spinkie tournaments.
Jim graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1960. After that, he followed his big brother into law enforcement in the early 60’s. He was assigned to the 25th Precinct in East Harlem NYC. After two years of service with the police department, he was called to the NY City Fire Department. He always said he was blessed to be called up by the NY Fire Department and began his career as a firefighter. He started with Ladder 27/Engine 46. Once he was promoted to Lieutenant, he was assigned to Ladder 48/Engine 94. He was then promoted to Captain and retired in early 2001 after 35+ years on the job.
Jim will always be remembered for his strength and perseverance. In July 1976 he had severed his left thumb in a home carpentry accident. He was removed from active duty because of the disability. He endured a 30 hour reconstructive surgery transplanting his big toe to his hand. Fourteen months after, he returned to active duty.
Jim is survived by his children, Jim and MaryBeth (Tim) Frohlich; doting Pop Pop to Billy, Justin, Emily and Julius; siblings Pat Mohr, Isabelle Rimmer, William Spink; and many nieces and nephews who just adored him; and good friend Stacey Clapp.
He was preceded in death by wife of 53 years Bernadine ‘Bonnie’ (2018) and his brother John ‘Jack’ (2023)
